The Native Council of Nova Scotia is the self governing authority for the large community of Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal peoples residing off-reserve in Nova Scotia throughout traditional Mi’kmaq territory. Our goal is to operate and administer a strong and effective Aboriginal Peoples Representative Organization that serves, advocates and represents our community.

ABORIGINAL PEOPLES TRAINING &EMPLOYMENT COMMISSION (APTEC)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: APTEC offers a range of employment and training services with the goal to obtain and maintain long term sustainable employment. This is completed through assessment, employment counseling, a mutually agreed upon return to work action plan and where determined, funding support. Current support programs consist of targeted or wage subsidies, job creation partnerships, skills development, and the self employment program. A range of youth programming is also available which are client centered programs that respond to individual needs. APTEC also provides programs and assistance to Aboriginal persons with disabilities to obtain and retain employment.

EDUCATION & STUDENT SERVICES

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Education and Student Services Programs are available to encourage Aboriginal students to remain in school and to pursue a higher level of education. Program supports include student services (guidance, support, advice, intervention, link between students/ parents/school/resources); awards (scholarship, academic achievement), leadership development and awards; and the Education Enhancement Program.

SOCIAL ASSISTANCE RECIPIENT SUPPORT FOR EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING (SARSET)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: SARSET is designed to assist therural and urban off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples of Nova Scotia who are receiving income assistance through theDepartment of Community Services, or are currently on a fixed income or no income. SARSET’s main role is to assist Aboriginal participants in realizing and achieving their goals for employment, training or upgrading. Program supports include identifying needs and barriers, long term supports to overcome barriers, planning to achieve success, information about training opportunities including upgrading or pre-employment preparedness courses, advocacy, job search skills (resume, coaching, mock interviews, interview tips), job referrals, and Labour Market information.
